Artist Interview:
Maya Milton

How did COVID-19 change, influence, or impact your work for this project?
I actually completed my work for the project before COVID-19 really hit, however once we were all aware of the pandemic the theme of “Fighting and Treating Disease” seemed to encompass the current fight we’re all in with this pandemic.
What is inspiring you and your artistic practice at this moment?
I am truly inspired and devoted to creating art that supports “Black Lives Matter,” the eradication of racial injustice, and systemic racism.

Out of the four themes key to the foundation’s work, is there a theme that resonates the most with you and your art?
The theme that resonates with me the most is “Survive and Thrive.” For this theme, my art focused on a woman holding the world atop her head moving away from a dark colorless area, which represents the negativity and struggles of the past. She is moving the world forward towards a brighter more positive future. This resonates with me because it feels as though we are in dark times now and we’re being asked to create a brighter future.
What do you hope people experience in viewing your artwork?
Generally, my work focuses on inspiring women to know their beauty and strength. Whenever anyone experiences my artwork I hope they see all the ways we are diverse and divine.
