Virtual STEM Global Educator Workshop

Join fellow STEM educators for Washington Global Health Alliance’s virtual STEM Global Educator Workshop This interactive and engaging session is designed to give you free activities and curriculum resources centered around COVID-19 to integrate into your virtual classrooms. The workshop sessions will feature activities tailored for high school curriculum standards. All materials have been adapted for remote teaching settings. Participate in activities aligned with Next Generation Science Standards to help you teach about COVID-19. Get global health curriculum and resources to engage your students. Boost your knowledge of Washington’s global health community and career opportunities for your students. Free.

Participants will earn three (3) Washington State STEM clock hours.


Educator Workshop: Banishing the Stigma of HIV/AIDS

Join the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Discovery Center and the World Affairs Council’s Global Classroom for an informative educator workshop on banishing the stigma of HIV/AIDS in our classrooms and community. Participants will learn more about the work of the Gates Foundation in addressing HIV/AIDS, experience the Discovery Center’s “Through Positive Eyes,” a new virtual exhibition featuring photography, stories, sculpture, and video by those living with HIV/AIDS and engage with local leaders who are taking meaningful action in our schools and communities. Please join us for this timely and essential discussion that encourages dialogic learning to challenge the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS in our local, national, and global community.

Educators will receive an in-depth curriculum resource guide, connect with other teachers and community partners, and receive two free clock hours.  Speakers Include: Lorna Tumwebaze: Program officer, Program Advocacy and Communication HIV/TB at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Lorna is a physician and public health specialist. She has extensive experience in national and regional health, education, population and development programs in the Africa and South Asia regions. Local Artivisits: Featured in the Discovery Center's "Through Positive Eyes" exhibit. Lisa Love: Lisa Love, Seattle Public Schools Manager of Health Education provides comprehensive health materials, support, staff development, and technical assistance to students, staff, and families. Steve Sawyer: Steve Sawyer is the Executive Director of People of Color Against AIDS Network, also known as POCAAN. Steve, advises on HIV/AIDS prevention education in the Renton School District, and provides referrals, information and education for newly diagnosed HIV-positive individuals in communities of color instead. Due to limited space, please register only if you are sure that you are able to attend the event!

In Partnership with the Pacific Science Center and the Museum of Pop Culture the Discovery Center brings teachers STEAM Power, a day dedicated to inspiring and supporting educators in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math). Take part in your choice of two out of three virtual workshops and a stimulating keynote. These workshops are designed especially for educators addressing a broad spectrum of STEAM learning, highlighting key topics from each organization’s specific areas of expertise, taught by each organization’s staff and professional educators.
